The primary method for producing methanol involves natural gas. The process begins with the production of syngas (synthesis gas) from methane and water. This stage, known as steam reforming, is the most common method for generating syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H₂). The process is facilitated by a catalyst, typically nickel.
It is important to note that syngas can also be produced from various other feedstocks, including coal, heavy petroleum residues, naphtha, natural gas, and biomass.
