Light Hydrocarbons

One category of light hydrocarbons serves the following purposes:

  • Fuel for spark-ignition, reciprocating internal combustion engines (four-stroke type).

  • Extractant or diluent for essential oils.

  • Solvent for rubber adhesives.

  • Cleaning agent for precision instruments.

  • Processing agent for synthetic leather.

Another type of light hydrocarbon is a mixture of C9-C12 paraffinic and aromatic hydrocarbons with a boiling range of 142-200°C. This compound is used as an industrial solvent, most commonly as paint thinner.

These solvents are clear, water-white liquids with a mild odor. They are chemically stable and non-corrosive. Their applications include use as an extraction solvent, cleaning solvent, degreaser, and as a solvent in aerosols, paints, lacquers, and asphalt products.

The primary and most significant application of these C9-C12 light hydrocarbons is in paints and lacquers, making them one of the most common solvents in the coatings industry. For instance, approximately 60% of its consumption in Europe is related to paints, lacquers, and nail polish. Its diverse applications also include:

  • A solvent in paint dryers.

  • A solvent in textile printing.

  • A degreaser for metal surfaces.

  • A solvent for waxes used on furniture, flooring, and shoes.

  • A solvent in dry-cleaning processes.

Furthermore, it is used in the diamond-cutting process for precision machining, known as diamond turning.
